Two
time defending National Champion Charlie “The Edge” Venegas
grabbed his first win of the 2009 XiiR Speedway season
Saturday night in front of more than 5,400 screaming race
fans at Comcast Arena in Everett—though the 41-year
old Californian certainly didn’t make it easy on
himself.
“That’s two
weeks in a row that I’ve had to come through the
Last Chance Qualifier,” Venegas said afterward. “The
competition this year is unbelievable.”
Venegas crossed the finish line just ahead of Anthony “The British
Bulldog” Barlow and XiiR rookie Ben Hopwood who finished third—making
his first career Podium. The victory vaulted Venegas to third in the XiiR
Speedway Championship standings after just two events.
Kelly Kerrigan’s Red Line
Oil No. 61 finished fourth
while David “Victor” Meldrum and James Mann
rounded out the six bike field.
“The crowd was absolutely
amazing,” said Barlow. “We had tremendous
support here in Everett—from the crowd to the local
riders and local sponsors like The Skagit Valley Casino
Resort. We’re just two rounds into a long, fourteen-round
season, but based on the crowds we’re seeing, 2009
is going to be a great year for X-Treme International
Ice Racing.”
The fans were treated to six exciting
Speedway heat races and a Last Chance Qualifier before
settling in for the A Main. Barlow won the first and
fifth heat races, Kerrigan took the victory in the second
heat while Ben “Warbo” Warburton got his
first-ever win in the night’s third Speedway heat.
James “Demolition” Mann took the checkered
flag in the fourth heat while Venegas won the sixth and
final Speedway heat.
In addition to the side-by-side, edge-of-the-seat racing, the crowd was
also treated to Nathan Siegel and Chris Hall’s first appearance on
Speedway bikes.
“ That was an absolute blast,” Siegel said with a smile afterward. “I
wasn’t very competitive though…I think I needed my training wheels.”
Barlow is currently first in the
Speedway point standings, just five markers ahead of
James Mann. Venegas, Kerrigan and Ben Hopwood round out
the top five.
